Announcing a new article publication for Zoonoses journal. This study was aimed at performing molecular and epidemiological investigation of Cryptosporidium spp. in calves in Beni-Suef governorate, Egypt.
Fecal samples were collected from 350 calves 2–12 weeks old. Samples were microscopically screened for Cryptosporidium spp. through a modified Ziehl-Neelsen staining technique followed by two-step nested PCR flanking the gp60 gene.
Cryptosporidium was macroscopically detected in 28.3% of fecal samples in younger group (2-8 weeks). The prevalence of infections was higher in diarrheic calves and during the rainy season. Most infections occurred at ages <8 weeks. The gp60 gene-based PCR and sequences confirmed the presence of Cryptosporidium species belonging to Cryptosporidium parvum subtype family IIa.
Microscopic examination aided in the initial detection, whereas molecular analysis confirmed the presence of zoonotic C. parvum. However, the absence of comprehensive gp60 subtyping and broader molecular screening limited detailed epidemiological characterization. More extensive molecular investigations are therefore required in future studies.
