Announcing a new article publication for Zoonoses journal. Brucellosis is a highly prevalent yet underdiagnosed bacterial zoonotic disease in many parts of the world, including the Middle East and Southeast Anatolia in Turkey. In India, the reported incidence is much lower. Skeletal system involvement in brucellosis almost always manifests as peripheral arthritis and spondylitis.
Spondylodiskitis with epidural abscess is a very rare and serious disease complication. The aim of presenting this case is to describe a rare complication of brucellosis and to highlight Brucella infection as a rare cause of spinal epidural abscess, particularly in endemic regions. The case of a patient with spondylodiskitis with spinal epidural abscess due to brucellosis is presented. The patient was treated with surgery with complete excision of the abscess, followed by triple drug therapy.
Both the brucellosis and the epidural abscess were completely cured at 1 year follow up. Brucellosis can cause spinal epidural abscess, particularly in regions where brucellosis is endemic. Deliberate history taking and specific testing are essential to achieving prompt diagnosis and optimal treatment of this condition, while avoiding severe lifelong complications.
